Virtual Networking Support

The COST Action BOTTOMS-UP will provide a grant of 4,000 euros for supporting the Action objectives by organizing its virtual cooperation.

Applicants should have a primary affiliation to an institution located in a COST Full or Cooperating Member country or MC Observers from a COST Near Neighbour Country.

The selection of successful grantee will be based on contributions to the overall objectives of the Action, with special reference to developing a standardized European platform of forest multi-taxon data.

We expect the grantee contribution in this direction to be based on:

  • Ability to coordinate data contributions from Action participants through R tools.
  • Facilitate collaboration among Action participants through the Action Git project.
  • Facilitate virtual networking among Action participants.
  • Aiding the Virtual Mobility grantees through assistance with data preparation and provision.

The work can be carried out wherever the grantee is based and will end by September 30th, since when the successful grantee will have 15 calendar days to submit a report on the collaboration activities organized and on the contribution to the Action.

 

 

Virtual Mobility Grants

A total of six Virtual Mobility Grants of 1,500 euros each will be available for the different tasks listed below.

Applicants will be evaluated based on their skills to work with large and heterogeneous datasets to pursue the aim of each specific working group, and to collaborate with a wide network of scientists on the topic of multi-taxon forest biodiversity.

 

 

Grant for Working Group 1 - Multi-taxon biodiversity

Main objective

The main objective of working group 1 is to process, standardize and harmonize data from participants and to produce a database including multiple species and functional diversity metrics (e.g., species and functional diversity in the Hill numbers framework), to be used in the upcoming analyses and analyses of these diversity metrics in response to forest management and other environmental change.

Working Plan

  • Calculation of diversity indices for rarefied samples using the iNEXT package in R.
  • Collation and analysis of functional trait data for multiple taxonomic groups.
  • Explorative analysis for the application of Species Distribution Models to the Action database.
  • Analyses of the relationships between functional diversity and climate change.

Grant for Working Group 2 - Management and stand structure effect on multi-taxon biodiversity

Main objective

Exploring interactions between stand structure and multi-taxon community biodiversity, as mediated by time and management types.

Working plan

  • Combining the BOTTOMS-UP database with data on the disturbance history.
  • Refining assessment of forest primary production from growing stock.
  • Exploring the creation of a synchronic sequence of stand structure and multi-taxon diversity.
  • Patterns of plant functional traits across different management systems.
  • Defining sound statistical approaches to analyse data on forest structure and related biodiversity and management techniques.

Grant for Working Group 3 - Forest Manipulation Experiments

Main objective

Working group 3 aims to enhance cooperation between forest manipulation experiments and to re-analyse some specific questions across several different experiments. The grant would allow to compare the effects of aggregated (gap) and dispersed cuttings on the environmental conditions and on the diversity of several components of the forest understory (herbs, woody regeneration, and bryophytes) in two experiments in different forest types with various site conditions.

Working Plan

  • Collect and harmonize raw data for the canopy opening manipulation experiments.
  • Common analysis on the data of the canopy opening experiments.

Main expected outputs

  • A common sampling design applicable in different experiments.
  • Comparable datasets of environmental variables and three organism groups from two experiments.

Grant for Working Group 4 - Forest Habitat Structures

Main objective

The goal of working group 4 is to identify and quantify habitat structures needed for the conservation of forest biodiversity to find thresholds of habitats needed for a sustainable forestry. This includes an evaluation of habitat structures used in the literature and comparisons with the database built by working groups 1 and 2, as well as an examination and harmonization of tree microhabitats in this database.

Working Plan

  • Definition of habitat structures.
  • Reviewing the use of habitat structures in the database.
  • Assessment of the tree microhabitats used in the database.

Grant for Working Group 5 - Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management

Main objective

The aim of the first action in the working group 5 is to test the existing sustainable forest management indicators related to biodiversity issued of Forest Europe (2020) against a multitaxonomic dataset. The idea would be to derive as much as possible indicators from the description of forest structure and other (notably landscape) variables to assess the power of SFM indicators to describe the biodiversity of several groups. Of course, most of the indicators of the Criterion 4 dedicated to biodiversity will be tested, but possibly other indicators from the other 5 criteria with a potential link with biodiversity will be assessed (see definitions and potential sources here.

Working Plan

  • Identify the indicators that could be calculated from the dataset itself (e.g., deadwood volume).
  • Identify the indicators that could be calculated from other sources and assess the relevance of the available sources to calculate such metrics (e.g., forest fragmentation vs. Landsat data).
  • Extract data from available sources and calculate metrics of the indicators.
  • Start exploring the dataset with biodiversity metrics as response variables.
  • Synthesis of “innovative” structural indices regarding biodiversity (i.e., diameter, distribution, etc., not already included in Forest Europe).
  • Extraction of “landscape variables” corresponding to indicators of Forest Europe.
  • Test indicators of habitat directive conservation status assessment vs. biodiversity.

  • A dataset including all the variables calculated for a selection of plots issued from the international database.
